Im needing a carb for my V-6 and im wondering if the Holley 390cfm(0-8007) is the way to go? Its readily available and not too costly. But the stock(emmissions) Q-jet is rated at 450cfm. I wonder if i end up wasting my time with the 390 and its vacuum secondaries. The motor itself is stock, the only performance enhancement is dual exhaust. If anyone has any opinion on this, i'd like to hear it.

Hey blue meanie.....I put the holley 390 on my V6 in 93 and ran it for 5 years until I decided to put a 600 manual secondary double pumper on it.....(it was a little modified after the second rebuild......heh heh)
you shouldn't have any problems running it. the 390 will be perfect for it.
When I got it I put it on the truck and dialed in the idle mixture and didn't touch it after that.
hope I was of some help!

Is it possible to install a mechanical secondary on the 390?

I've tried to find info thru the Holley website but either the site isn't fully up or i cant access it correctly. I found a holley carb in the P.A.W. catalog (page 460) Its a 450 cfm with mechanical secondaries but no choke. Its around 70.00 less than the 390. Both will need an adapter plate but im not sure if there's a provision for a brake booster. I really want a mechanical secondary. But will a 450 be a little too big. I can add a manual choke.

in my opinion the 450 will not be too big.
if it is cheaper and you can add the choke then go for it.
you will have the manual secondaries and if you decide to go a little wilder you will have something to work with.
