I used to have this handy diagram that basicaly showed the cylinders and distributor cap with the numbers on them. Where cylinder #1 was and its match on the cap and so on. Well now that I need the damn thing, I cant find it. Can anyone help with this? Ive been searching and all I can find is firing orders which dont help because I dont know which cylinders are which and what spot on the cap matches.

Your firing order for a sbc motor is

1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

Learn it...know it....live it :D

The drivers side bank are the odd numbers and pass side are even starting at the radiator end of the motor. I.E. Drivers side from radiator back are

1-3-5-7

The passenger side from radiator back are

2-4-6-8

As for which wire is no. 1 on the cap, try to follow me and I'll describe it the best I can. If your distrubutor is in the "neutral" position meaning if you have an HEI, that the coil wires are straight out to the drivers side, and if you have a normal points dist., the 2 cap hold down screws are even parallel with the back of the motor, (did that make any sense 8O ), then you will want to stand in front of the car facing the firewall. You will have 2 terminals on the end of the cap facing you. The one on the left side is where #1 cylinder is. then proceed with the firing order going clockwise around the cap. WHEW! I hope that helps you and maybe someone else can explain better than me.
Good luck! :D

Depending on the cap with your HEI, some of them came with numbers stamped onto the top of the cap. I got one of them...I think it came from NAPA, and it sure made life easier when your swapping or tuning ignition. Just a thought.
