i took the axles out of the jeep to put on my luv and hit a snag the rear was supposed to be a dana 44 or 41 with 5.38 gears. well its not. its a dana 23 with 4.88 gears. the 23 is a very weak axle and i think it would be a waste of time to put it on. the front is still a dana 25 so i will still use it. heres where i need some input. i have 2 options. regear the stock rear axle or swap in a different rear axle. chances are whatever axle i find for the rear will still have to be regeared. i can't find 4.88 gears for the stock rear but i did find 5.38 gears. i can easily find used 5.38 gears cheap on ebay for the 25. this truck will only be used offroad so the gears will be fine. i'm wondering how strong the stock rear would be running 5.38 gears and 33" tires and maybe a lockright.
