 Post subject: Spooled?
PostPosted: Tue Jul 13, 2004 6:09 pm
My friend has a 76 luv with a 350 and a 4 spd trans. It has a 10 bolt out of a Camaro, I think... Anyways, he wants to take the open diff out and put in a spool... We spooled most of our drag cars, but I dont know how well/badly it would work on something that is on the street... We mainly use the truck for highway travel, but would take a couple turns every now and then..... Anyone in here ever tried putting a spool in for a street car????

Welcome to the site.

I wouldn't do it, personally. If the truck is mostly going to be driven on the highway what benefit is the spool going to provide?
I would just stick with the way it is.

on a side note... I just acquired another center chunk for my 9", so I'll keep the 3.00 gears in one for driving and was thinking about spooling 4.56 in the other for racing.

Thanks.... We have a Trans-am that is spooled, and it handles fine on going from the pits to the track at our local drag strip, but I have never had em going through a corner at more than 5mph, so I didnt know how they would handle a 70-80mph curve.... I have limited slip in one of my cars, but the rest are open (except one which has the spider gears welded, so I guess you can call that a backyard posi)......

I run a spool and all I can say is don't hit the gas in a corner. other wise I broke 1 limited slip and 2 posies the spool is the only one that has survived

I have a spool in a 10bolt that has been on the street for over 10 years. all your U turns will quickly become 3 pointers. you are also susceptible to yanking an axle out if you take corners too fast. Mine has been reliable but I have heard stories.

I've seen more than a couple 4x4 trucks with "Lincoln Lockers" (welded gears) around here that do ok on the road. From what I've heard from people I know with them, tire wear is a problem and those sharp turns in parking lots don't go any too sharp anymore. I know at least one with 35 inch tires and hasn't broken anything in about 5 years of running it on and off road pretty much daily.
