a 22R from a toyota would be a good upgrade if you want to keep a 4 banger. good on gas, great aftermarket support, and will toss you back in your seat if you hop up the engine a bit(cam, header, weber carb etc).

ok Cameron, I dont know your age but the first thing in hot rodding you have to learn is ...... performance and horsepower/ hotroddingand crusing all do not have a gas milage rate. milage and rodding are not in the same class. you either want to go fast or you want to get the milage.... gotta learn that real fast

If ya not in for the V8 you could always think of a 4 cyl turbo. Still get decent fuel milage and also have a fair amount of power there when you want it. A pretty cheep import engine should not be to hard 2 get or a half cut. SR20DET nissan or VR4 mitsubishi to name a couple. There should be heaps of different thing's youcan choose from. cheers!

I think you could performance tune the motor you have by grabbin a weber carb, doing an adjustment on the valves, and you should be set. I could always get my 80 4X4 to squalk the tires in forward and backwards.

Plus I got kick ass mileage.

the main producer of hp is the heads! they must flow air! the more air you let in the cylinder the more power you will produce! you can achieve a lot of power on demand while still keeping somewhat good fuel economy by porting the intake, head(s), and throwing the stock exhaust manifold as far as you can..... install the header(s). a nice mild street/ strip cam couldn't hurt either. a lot of quality engine shops have flow a flow bench. you can calculate the horsepower and engine rpm by simply flowing the heads. that'll give you a pretty close idea of the rpm at witch the engine will produce the most power and where torque and hp begin to drop off. (shift points) before you even have the engine assembled! I'd also suggest having the vehicle dyno tuned to fine tune any engine adjustments. Its a small price to pay to have a perfect performer.
