2.3L (aka 4ZD1) motors came in 1986 Troopers and some early 1987s
You will also find them in Isuzu PUP/pickups from about 86 up to 93.
They were also used in Impulses starting about 85 or 86.
You can also find them in early model Amigos up to 93.
I think the 2.3L was still used after 93, but 93 was the last year for the carbed version which would make any swap into a LUV *much* easier.

The year and a half of Troopers were all carbureted, I think all the Impulses were Fuel Injection. I am less sure about pickups and Amigos, but I think that most of them had a carb up until 93.

For a 2WD, look for an Isuzu pickup donor. Anything made after 86 with a carb on it is pretty much going to be a 2.3L motor. I don't think they ever put a 2.6L (which looks identical to the 2.3L) in anything without putting fuel injection on it. To verify, the block should have 4ZD1 cast into the left side near the front. A 2.6L block will say 4ZE1. They also have the same marks cast into the back side of the head, but its tough to read that if the motor is in something.

On the 4WD donors, the front driveshaft does not seal the trans/transfer case (like the rear) so you could use a 4x4 trans with the tcase in it. It might be interesting to have low range in a 2wd truck besides though it wouldn't be much good unless you wanted to cruise at 10MPH in 4th gear. You cannot take off the tcase, but I don't think it would be in the way too much other than it might hang down a bit. If you are really going low you might want to look at how low the tcase would sit because you wouldn't want to drag it on a speedbump. The tranny and tcase share fluid so a hole in one is a hole in the other.

The 4ZE1 2.6L is pretty much the same other than only coming with fuel injection. You can put the intake from a 2.3L carbed motor on one and get a few more cubic mililiters and still have it be simple. Add a header, weber 38 DGES carb, camshaft upgrade, and a 2.6L would be good for at least the 120HP they are rated stock with fuel injection and probably more like 130 or so. My HP numbers are all just SWAGs* though, so take them with a grain of salt.

I have been hatching a plan for a while to do a 2.6L with 5spd in a LUV. I figured to start with a 2.3L intake and carb, and then be on the hunt for a turbo Impulse to rob computer, turbo, and MPFI parts from. Then a month of pain and suffering getting all those sensors and wiring hooked up right and I'd have somewhere around 150-170HP in a turbo 4 cylinder. Maybe more with a bigger turbo, injectors, and something of a cam upgrade. For a LUV, that would be a lot more power and yet not push me into the single digits for miles per gallon. With the price of gas these days I couldn't enjoy a V8 as a daily driver, but ~20MPG highway and running within sight of 200HP would be a fun machine.

a 2.6 carbed with a header and cam would be a fun truck to have..not super fast but still enough power to get around town quicker........

good luck finding a turbo impulse though....I saw a fuel injected impulse in the u-pull-it in tualitin a couple weeks ago. I was excited until I saw that it was not a turbo car.

Yep, those turbo impulses are not easy to come by. That is exactly the reason I came up with a backup plan since I may never find all the parts needed to make a bolt on turbo upgrade for the 2.6L

With a Weber 38 the power should be pretty good, especially with exhaust upgrades to let the motor exhale better. My gut says you could beat the baseline HP even taking the loss from pulling the injection off. Beats doing the wiring twice though in the event I come up with an Impulse.

calmini makes headers and camshafts for 2.6 engine, should make it easy to beat the efi performance with that :D

I was hopin' this thread would stay a little more on topic. My brother-in-law has a broke down 86' Isuzu P'up with a 2.3 and a 5 spd, 4X4, (which I want to keep). I was wanting to hear if anyone's swapped this across before?

I just now finally noticed that RMS80luv is talking about a 75 luv. That complicates things a bit in that the motor mounts have pretty much no chance of lining up. Even 76 and newer luvs might have difficulties, but they at least look similar to my eye.

An 86 4x4 P'up with a 2.3 and a 5 spd would be a good canidate for going into an 80 luv 4x4. If my theories hold any water, the motor mounts might need a little reworking, but other than that you could look the swap just like putting a trooper 5 spd in. (which has been done by at least one person here, to my knowledge the 2.3 swap hasn't) You need the front driveline from the donor, and you need the rear driveline shortened to make up for the longer trans. Also you need to do some fairly minor sounding fab work on the trans mounts and relocating the e-brake cables. There are some wiring issues in getting the 2.3L ingition system up and running, but that shouldn't be too complex to figure out. With a complete donor vehicle, you would have all the parts you'd need with the exception of the rear driveline, plus you should have most everything to add power steering along the way.

LUVs are all carb and Isuzu didn't start with injection on trucks/troopers until mid 87 with the 2.6L, well unless you count diesels.
