 Post subject: rear end question

At one point I knew this. When you turn one tire on the rear and the other one spins opposite, whats that meen?

As far as I know, unless you have a locker, that's what they're supposed to do. Why they do it, I'm not intirely sure, and have been wondering about ever since I was a kid.
