Im needing to get an ignition system for the small block that's going in to the truck. I'd like to get a system that has a smaller distributor so i dont have to do any firewall mods. After looking around the internet, i have come to the conclusion that i dont know what im looking for. So maybe somebody that's more savy can offer some advice.
1. Smaller distributor than the H.E.I. unit. (I dont what to go with a points setup)
2. The motor will be basicly stock block with minor mods (Edelbrock intake, 650 c.m.f. carb, mild street cam, Hooker headers, dual exhaust)
3. The build is for idle to 5000 r.p.m. With the 2.75 to 1 axle ratio, it only makes sense.
Basicly, im just looking for a suitable replacement that will do the job of a stock H.E.I. ignition. Cost is a factor also. I dont want to buy a system thats more than i need.
Thanks!

Mallory unilites are prone to burning out the module. I have had extremely good luck with mine but i went to the MSD Billet anyway. I have seen too many people burn the module out in the staging lanes.

Do the distributors come with an external coil or is that a seperate item?

From what i can tell, the Pro Billet 8361 distributor will need an external coil plus the ignitor box. Now im leaning towards working the firewall to fit a stock H.E.I. unit in place. I dont think im ready to spend 350.00 to get spark to the plugs. There is another distributor setup (Summit p/n msd-8474) thats cheaper but still kinda pricey.

MSD billet is external coil
Mallory Unilite is external coil
HEI can be built up to suit your high perf needs just fine. they can be set up with external or internal coil. use a high perf module, a low resistence center bushing, MSD Blaster coil with a 6AL or better box. if its full race then lock out the advanace completely. I would use a built up HEI over a Mallory. Mallory unilites use a light bulb to tell your ignition when to spark. as we all know, light bulbs burn out.
