 Post subject: Ford 2.3L swap
PostPosted: Mon Mar 22, 2004 11:55 am
I just got a 1977 Chevy Luv with about 197,000 miles on it and I am curious to know if I could swap a 2.3L Ford Courier engine into my luv. Would the bolt line up, what would I need to do to make it work. From my assumptions the two engines are pretty close to each other.

thank you

the couriers had mazda engines in them.
the luvs have isuzu engines in them.

what are you wanting to bolt to?
the mazda to the isuzu tranny (doubtful)

the mazda to stock engine mounts (doubtful without modification)

any hybrid engine swap is going to have pretty much the same modifications done to them. the engine mounts, tranny mount, exhaust, wiring and some other things to consider as well.

it helps if someone has previously done a similar swap, so you can take advantage of their knowledge.

maybe someone will chime in that has done this. :D

oh and welcome to the board!

Actually the 2.3L in the Couriers are Ford engines (I had an 80 Courier). It is the same engine that they put in the Pintos. They are good engines, but expensive to rebuild when you need to.
I am not sure about the fitment into the LUV though, I am sure it is possible.
I am sure somebody can give you more information on that part of it. :)

I think that they did put Mazda engines in them as well, but those were the 2L engines I believe (same as the B2000 pickups :? ).

i believe the ford 2.3 that was used in thunderbirds(if it's not the same engine as the courier/rustang one) is pretty stout and holds up to a turbo quite well...they were used in turbo coupes

The turbo 2.3 except for a few minor differences and the head is a Pinto
motor. However this swap would as expensive to do as putting in a V8
and not have the power or be cool.

Good luck with what ever you deciede to do.

why not stick a 2.3 isuzu in? probably has more power than the courier. it should bolt up to the luv transmission.

The older couriers were mazda motors, the 80+ were ford motors (probably still made by mazda though). The 2.3L motor in the turbo coupes is a little different from the rest, it comes with forged internals from the factory and has a much better flowing head. The courier 2.3L is like what was found in the pintos. They are capable of lots of power. But since it is a ford, expect to spend twice as much money on parts than you would if you stuck with the chevy.

you ask why a ford in chevy? why a ford hot rods and other kit cars and stuff chevy powered? dont get me wrong i like chevy(duh) but i mean i think it all depends on whats available and what you have for cash to spend on the swaps.....i also like some fords....i like ford cause i dont have to stand on my head to change points(not all of us can afford eletronic ignitons) or to adjust timming..but then ford has thoghs funny ass angles on the plugs that cause tem to break alot when they are being removed(mostly when there are still warm) so yeah like every thing in the world there is good and bad!
