I have a 79 Luv 4x4 that was given to me in the early 90's. I was a dumb teenager then just learning how to work on things. The bed was rusted out, but it ran good at the time and everything worked. Being a teenager, a tiny, hand-me-down rustbucket with a 4 cylinder wasn't cool, so it was parked in the field with the other "collections".

It's still there, all these years later, and I'm playing with the idea of dragging it up and doing something with it. I realize that parts may either be too expensive or possibly impossible to find. That's one reason why I'm here. I'm looking for the seasoned vets who have the answers.

So, my first question is about the engine. I'm not interested in dropping an LS, a 350, or even a V-6 in. Has anyone tried or considered the Atlas 4 or 5 cylinder from a Colorado/Canyon? I'm sure that would cause issues concerning the compatibility to the manual trans in it, but all projects need a starting point right? I'm looking forward to any input provided, good or bad.

The stock transmission only mates to a few 4 cylinder Isuzu engines. It also has a married transfer case. So you'd likely be needing to swap engine, trans. and transfer case.
