What 4-6 cylinder diesel or gas engines would fit (without too much cutting) that are also relatively easy to tune/have decent aftermarket (finding engine dimensions is way harder than it should be tbh)
This seems like a lot of effort and expense for a truck that you consider "ratty". I'd stick with stuff that's not too rare, and not too complicated to install. Two Isuzu diesels would fit without too much work, but they're both getting pretty rare: The 1.8L 4FB1 (from Chevettes and I-Marks), and the 2.23L C223 (from Isuzu P'ups and 2nd generation LUVs).

What manual transmissions would work with that engine and also fit? or should i just leave the Vega transmission in it? (i know ill probably have to get/make an adapter plate for whatever i end up putting in it, but Ive accounted for that)
The Isuzu MSG-5 came with the 4FB1 and the C223. I'd stick with one of those.
