Hi all,

several months ago I purchased a very ratty old 78 Long-bed (used to be a ranch/farm truck) with a vega rally 5 speed trans in it coupled to the stock 1.8 gas engine (don't ask me why, it had that in it when i got it), and Ive been planning on doing (among other things) an engine swap to either some kind of japanese sports car engine, or a diesel so i can convert it to run on used fry oil, but Ive got some questions that Ive had very little luck googling for

What 4-6 cylinder diesel or gas engines would fit (without too much cutting) that are also relatively easy to tune/have decent aftermarket (finding engine dimensions is way harder than it should be tbh)

What manual transmissions would work with that engine and also fit? or should i just leave the Vega transmission in it? (i know ill probably have to get/make an adapter plate for whatever i end up putting in it, but Ive accounted for that)

ideally i kinda want to be able to find as much of this crap in a junkyard/ as possible, i know that ill still be putting a pretty penny into this thing with this and everything else i have planned for this poor thing, but ideally i don't want to break the bank getting new parts unless i absolutely have to.

I live at ~6500 feet above sea level so id prefer engines i could turbo or supercharge so i can still squeeze some decent power out of it despite the whole lack-of-air thing

side note... does anyone have a link to a forum/any info on doing a 5 lug swap on these things without a ton of machine shop weirdness or crazy expensive kits?

This seems like a lot of effort and expense for a truck that you consider "ratty". I'd stick with stuff that's not too rare, and not too complicated to install. Two Isuzu diesels would fit without too much work, but they're both getting pretty rare: The 1.8L 4FB1 (from Chevettes and I-Marks), and the 2.23L C223 (from Isuzu P'ups and 2nd generation LUVs).

The Isuzu MSG-5 came with the 4FB1 and the C223. I'd stick with one of those.

Thanks for the input, if i can find one of those that wont cost me an arm and/or leg ill seriously consider it, until then I've found that a VW 1.9 tdi would fit and ther'es a relatively inexpensive kit to hook it into a Suzuki samurai transmission. so if nothing else I could still have a wierd little diesel to mess around with.

and who ever said i meant ratty as a bad thing? just means I don't have to worry about fucking up a nice luv with weird mods
