I am installing a SBC in my 2wd truck and I am having issues with the headers hitting the under motor cross member. I am using Hooker Supercomp swap headers and building my own front mounts. I have an ACE rear mount I am using for location of the trans. The cab is off the frame as I am changing everything. With the trans mount in place I have to remove the trans mount bolts and go back with the block and trans 1" to 1.5"rearward for the headers to clear the under motor cross member. Does anyone have any measurements of the location of the front motor mounts to front cross member or rear block mounting flange to trans cross member? Or even a harmonic balancer to front cross member distance? I may need to raise the motor to gain some clearance to move forward but, 1" to 1.5" is going to be tough to overcome! Thanks!

I see in your build thread, you are running front coil overs. I would just fab a cross member and remove the stock one. Hooker and ACE stuff doesn't interchange. If you want to keep the stock cross member, buy a Hooker trans mount, and it should slide in...

Oh interesting; I am wanting to do the same to my 72 Luv in the near future but I am not there yet. Like you, I have purchased a set of the Hooker Header Supercomp swap series headers and also purchased an ACE trans mount for the Luv and planned on fabricating the motor mounts. on the frame. Some time ago I read a post on this site where someone had done the same process using the same components, made their own motor mounts and made it work. However I don't know if they had any clearance issues or had to make adjustments to make it all work. Hopefully they will see your post and respond. I'm just wondering since I'm not there yet, are the headers hitting the lower portion of the cross member that is the bolted on portion of the cross member or are they hitting the frame mounts where the cross member bolts to? Again, your post is very timely for me too, thanks!

Mytmouz the trans mount is almost exactly the same as a Hooker mount. I have researched all the info here that I could find. I need to get some measurements from someone with Hooker front mounts. Balancer to front cross member will get me close. And how high the mount is above the frame. The headers are almost touching the cross member now so the only way to get more is raise it up and forward. The only difference between the ACE and Hooker mounts is the headers for Hooker will not work with the ACE mounts.

The headers are hitting the main frame mount not the cross section.

Widetrack, I would totally agree between the Hooker and the Power By Ace transmission mount locating the engine/transmission horizontally is the same. It looks to me that the Power By Ace mount drops the transmission tail shaft vertically about 1 1/4" lower from what the Hooker mount does. Thanks for the crossmember info.

I have the ace mounts in my street truck, with the Ace headers, and the stock torsion front end. I did away with the trans mount, and cut out the center of the stock cross member and plated it, so I could fab/use a removeable center mount. I did this because I went from a 700R4 to a 4L80E. In my race truck, I have custom headers now, but it originally had the Hooker headers. It has fabbed motor mounts, and since I have coil overs, I did as described above, in my first post.

The hooker mounts are designed to have the firewall notched . It can be done without the firewall modes , but it is a balancing act with the mounts you build .

Hotrod, so what you are saying is that the Hooker Headers do not allow clearance forward. So I will have to balance the position of the motor for best clearance everywhere! I still could use a measurement as to how high the front mounts are above the frame and to the front cross member and then I will just WING IT! LOL Thanks!

The trans cross member is fine it is the front (under pan) cross member that the headers hit. I have modified the trans cross member for removing transmission without pulling everything to get it out. I am just trying to get everything real close before tacking it in.

I have the hooker munts and headers . I didn't cut the fire wall , but the HEI is up against the fire wall . I had clearance issues where the passengerside header tube tuck in around the 2 crossmember bolts at the lower control arm mount area . Had to dimple a couple of tubes .

Would you have a pic or two of the location of headers to the cross member or any measurements of mount locations? I am also running a MSD dizzy and that will help.
And by the looks of a Hooker trans mount the holes for mounting the trans to mount I am still back about 1" to 1.5" to the rear of the truck. There is no more room to move forward to attach the bolts in the trans mount. Measurements on the Hooker mount are 5.3125 from cross member frame to the trams rubber mounting hole and I am back a inch or better on the mount. Header tube is against the front control arm cross member. I will get some pics to make a better understanding.

Maybe these will give some idea. I am thinking the whole setup is to low!

Widetrack, as I noted the other day I am finding your posts/topic of interest and appreciate the info too. I don't know if it will help your cause and maybe you have already seen the drawing for the Hooker HOK-12606 mounts. I found the drawing under LUVTruck opening page under the Information tab in the Miscellaneous category, drawing A of the Hooker V8 swap motor mounts. I realize you are building your own which look really good but thought the drawing might give a height measurement based on the info in the drawing. Again, maybe you already seen the drawing but thought I would mention it.

Yeah, your motor mounts are too low. Here is a pic (if you have the photobucket fix) of mine. I have 2-1/8 tubes now, but originally, the Hooker headers were installed with the mounts as they are.

I know the motor is low now. When I took the pics the hoist was relaxed (bled off) and it was sitting low. I will raise it and see if I can get it higher and forward.

Is the Hooker trans mount flat on top and is it flush with the top of the cross member? Thanks!

That pic helped me out! Thanks

3rdLUV here. I recently installed 350 350 in my '72 LUV using the Hooker headers. Fabricated front mounts. Running 8" balancer and HEI. No clearance problems, but very tight. Will take photos this weekend and post, if I can figure out how to do that.

That would be great. If you have problems posting pictures as I did, I can send you my email or phone number to send the pics to! Make sure to resize the pics smaller and use the choose file below and it should work fine.

I need a side view pic of a hooker trans mount. I decided to build my own and would like to see the differences between the ACE and Hooker mounts! Thanks

On the main LUV page, there is an article on making a removeable cross member section. The trans mount looks to be a Hooker mount...

I think you are right but, the pics of the mount that I have found (Hooker) it looks to be flush with the top of the cross member. The pics are always showing the mount upside down.
