The real question for me is whether to swap a 6.2 detroit diesel into my luv with an nv4500 behind it, or just built the absolute piss out of the 1.8l. Any reccomendations? Also, im buying a new block with complete brand new bottom end, any ideas before i buy it and put it together to make a bit more power?

Although built by GM most don’t associate the 6.2/6.5 with Detroit. The 6.2 weighs more then a big block. I worked for the State and we had the largest fleet of 6,2 in the State. All I will say is I would use it as a boat anchor but I would think it would fail as that too.

Unless you have access to a complete fab shop, I think you're going to spend a US air craft carriers weight in gold trying to get that big of a Diesel to work in a Luv.

If you want to "build the piss" out of a G180, check out the folks that already have - http://www.turbogemini.com

Those Aussies are Gonzo crazy when it comes to squeezing bhp out of a G180. They talk about 350hp as if we were talking about getting 90hp out of them.

Another thing, on that site theyre using a g161, and how interchangable are the parts ofr these engines? Because i noticed the g161 has the intake on the opposite side as my 180 so im just curious.

Oh, I missed that yours is a 1975. There are two models of G180 - yours (1972-1975) is the earlier version (both manifolds on the one side). The G161 and up that the Aussies play with are the later hemi head versions that came in the 1976 and up Luvs (and the Holden Gemini).

Not much in the way of aftermarket high performance stuff for yours, hate to say.

Its because of the LHD RHD.

My '75 luv is inverted compared to the US models.

Alright haven't checked this thread in a min, so, sad times. But is there any way to go fuel injection? even if it means completely custom intake manifold, is there any way to do that? and is the block different in any way post 76? Because I might be buying a new block from someone but they aren't sure what year it is. any way to check and see? sorry, a bit dumb when it comes to this stuff.

Also, since my head isn't the hemi, can I shave the head for compression or no?

Yet another also, can I swap the head with the hemi type heads if not?

I believe some newer (mid to late 80's) Troopers had FI on these same basic engines and it will bolt on. Don't quote me on that though.

Those will all be for the 77 and newer G180's, not yours. I'm thinking about the only way to get what you're looking for out of your truck is to get an adapter plate machined and stuff a built Toyota 22R in there.

There really is no way to get much out of your engine. It's a totally different animal than the newer one, which could use the head and EFI off an Isuzu Impulse, you could bolt in a 2.3L out of a Trooper (no EFI, though), or I do believe the 2.6 EFI engine out of the 88-91 (I think) Troopers matched the newer G180 engines, but IIRC there's really nothing that matches yours.

No, they are as different as the SBC 350 (5.7L) and the Nissan Titan's 5.7L

The easiest way to tell will be that the distributor on yours is back by cylinder #3 and there's a mechanical fuel pump by cylinder #1. The newer engines the distributor is run off the timing chain and is up in front of cylinder #1 in the timing cover and it's an electric fuel pump, so no place for one on the engine.

Are you looking because one of yours is broken or missing? Or is it because they are "stretched"?

If it's because they are stretched, throw those bad boys back in. None of the Luv engines used torque sensitive head bolts. They are reusable.
