I am about two weeks away from getting my newly machined SBC 350 back from the machine shop...

One thing I realized is that the rear end i found (from an '91 Isuzu Trooper - 12 bolt with 4.56) has a gear ratio that would suck at highway speeds.

So, i'm trying to figure out if anyone can help a nubie figure out how to put some high gears in. Preferably a 3.73 or a 4.11. Anyone have any suggestions?

I'm having a hard time finding a chevy 12 bolt with posi or a ford 9 inch that doesn't totally break my bank (and then i'd have to have them shortened too). I'm a little overwhelmed with all the research i've been doing (and i do have to work) to know which cars or trucks to be looking at for these also).

If you tell me there's no way to do this, i guess i'll have to save up a bit for it. I was originally looking for a s truck rear end, but was told they are weak.

Thanks in advance!

I am no expert in this, but from what I've heard 4WD Toyota truck axles are pretty tough, about the same width as a stock Luv axle, and maintain the original wheel bolt pattern.

You might have to modify the spring perches, but that should be about it. So long as your SBC isn't pumping out God amounts of BHP, a Tacoma or Hilux axle should be fully capable of keeping up.

Narrowing an 8.8 out of an Explorer. isn't very expensive. Take an extra "short-side" axle out of another donor, cut the long tube down 2 15/16" and put the other short axle in the narrowed side. The explorer 8.8 is posi, 31 spline, has disc brakes, and can be 3.73 or 4.10 but is easily identified by a tag on the back. It does use c-clips but is a pretty strong rear.

Do some googling on this though to be sure I haven't told you anything wrong.

Some general info that might be useful:
Your LUV axle is 54" WMS to WMS, 7.5" R&P, 4.10 gears, reasonably strong for it's size. 3.92 (Impulse), 3.73 & 3.42 (Diesels) gearsets are out there but rare
Toyota 6-hole pickup through '85 is 55.5", '86-'95 is 58", '96-'04 is 61"
'91 Trooper is 58"
1st Gen Rodeo is 59.75", is a 6-hole Dana 44 but 4.10 or 4.30 geared
For comparison a full size 6-hole pickup will be about 65"
Explorer 8.8' is 59.5" but has a 5-bolt pattern

Something else I always wondered about for a replacement LUV rear:
Early Jeep Waggoneers with Quadritrac had a 6-hole Dana 44 rear with the differential offset several inches to the passenger side. Use two narrow-side axles, shorten the long-side tube to fit. Don't know the final width.

I wonder what the old International Scout D44 width is? But then again, 5 bolt pattern...

If stick go to a 5 speed. If automatic use a 700R4 / 4L60 transmission with O.D.

Ok.... so a guy is selling a 2003 Ford Mustang v8 8.8 posi. I realize it will still need to be narrowed... what do you think?

It can be done, but you'll have to do some looking around at junk yards. Chevrolet made some S-10's with a 8.5 rear in in different ratios, and many were posi-traction. On different S-10 sites, you can find the RPO codes which tell you the rear end, and the ratio. They were in the 90's S-10 trucks which are now starting to appear in the junk yards. The codes tell how to look at the back of the rear end, to tell what it is. Also and a lot more rare, are the nine inch Fords that came in the older V-8 Mustangs which will also fit. They are still out there, but you have to go looking, and you have to know what you are looking for. All the information is available, but again, you have to put in the time to find it. Also the good ole Ford 8.8 which I believe is in the old rusted out Broncos if you are fortunate enough to know where one is. Otherwise, save up and get exactly what you want. If highway is your main concern the are a lot of 2:73 rear ends to be had because everybody wants a 4:56 If you want both, the best ratio is going to be a 3:73. Good luck.

On my 350 sbc V-8 swap I have 3:23 gears with a 700 R4 transmission. The truck is a great highway cruiser with the overdrive. The low 1st gear of the 700R4 is great for off the line launches also.

Good info! Thanks! So much research and every time I think I have it figured out I learn new stuff.... I am planning on using 3.73 gearing or maybe 4.10... I have a rear end from an Isuzu Trooper with 4.56 gearing but I heard that wouldn't be good (highways). Its only a few inches oinger than the stock one too... would be fun off the line though, right?

I have a luv with 4.10's and another one with 3.73. Depends on what you are doing with the truck. Both are street driven and I like the 3.73 over the 4.10 for street driving. Both have V-8'S.

I was leaning towards 3.73s.

my truck has a Chrysler 8 3/4 with 3.55 gears, I don't know what car the diff out of because I bought the truck with in already but it is uncut, I'am running a sbc 383 so 3.55'a are about perfect for street/strip with a 350 I'd go 3.73 or 3.90

I'm working on getting it all out together. The rebuilt small block is so close... Rear end is still an annoyance... Finding something that will fit with the right gearing is a pain. Isuzu pick ups have 4.11 gears that will fit in my Isuzu trooper rear end... But finding a pick up is tough...

Doesn't the BEER BUDGET build call for a 2nd gen Camaro rearend? I built a 9" for my truck and wished that I would have used 3.50 to 3.73 gearing instead of 4.11! It will be mainly a drag truck with street ability but, the 4.11 will hinder that some. An 8" Ford Maverick or Comet would be a good choice too if the motor has less than 500 HP. All of these run 5 lug it is just the way it is.

Beer budget calls for a s10 rear end.

I'll look into the Maverick/Comet rear end... but it comes down to finding them around here. The reason behind the Isuza was strength and disc brakes....

You are correct on the S10 rear end. The Maverick is 56" wide and disk conversions are fairly cheap using Right Stuff brake kits. Only thing to change is the spring mounts.
