I have two rust free Chevy LUVS. 75 and 77. The 75 needs a trans and engine and likely so does the 77. The 77 has a running drive train but the PO stripped the smog equipment off which is NLA new OR used. Strong motor but with a 45 DGOE Weber side draft that needs jetting work. It sputters on transition from idle to WOT. Typical Weber...

So, what modern engine and trans will fit in the engine bay(s) without much cutting or welding besides engine mounts and such?

I have done 4 to 6 and V8 conversions in Porsche tubs but never on an import truck. I have a full set of tools and a welder setup, Argon wire fed 220v, yada yada....

Who has been there done that? A cheap V8 wreck with a Turbo 350/400 swap would be nice.....V6, Subie Roo, whichever. I have heard the 400 may not fit w/o a lot of tunnel work.

Just need advice as to what to avoid and what is the easiest install the least amount of labor.

350/350 is a popular choice for these trucks. There are kits available, both weld-in from Hooker Headers and bolt-in from powerbyace.com

Check out the budget v8 swap article under the information section of the main front page. www.luvtruck.com

I have had a t400 in before, needed some hammer work to fit. I have drummerforhire's old truck now, and I swapped a 700r4 that he had with no tunnel mods, to a 4L80e. I modded somewhat heavily for that, but it was no biggie. The powerbyace headers and frame mounts that drummer had work great, I like the headers better than the hooker's, as the flanges are thicker. I added some flanges from a vw header kit to the slip tubes, as I am not a fan of slip tubes.

There is no need for firewall mods or cutting out the top of the core support if the installation is properly done...
