If I was to go with a narrowed 9 inch rear, but not back half my truck, how wide a tire can I get between the frame and body?
What has worked for you?

Depends upon where the tire needs to clear. On my truck at the top center of the arch there's 11" between the frame & the fender lip, at the bottom front corner there's 9-1/2", at the bottom rear there's only 9". If the tire diameter is small enough to stay away from the fender corners you could probably tuck 10" top center.

if you have a fleetside you can get a 29x10.5 slick under It, If you have a step side if will vary to the type of fender flair is on the fenders so anywhere from a 9 inch wide to a 10.5 slick. On the fleet bed the bed floor ends even with the frame but the stepside carries over about an inch. I had a 29x10.5 on my 76 fleet side and a 9 inch wide slick on why 76 step side. Hot rod has the truck truck now with the second set of fenders on it and I think he has a 29x10.5W on it now.

And 29x10.5 is enough to give you plenty of traction at the track? I plan on a built sbc, possibly a powerglide and 9 inch. Hoping to run in the 10's-11's. Just not wanting to back half it if I can get away with it.

yep....went 6.20 on a 9inch hooiser slick in the truck in my avatar. That was on the factory luv suspension front and back with factory shocks, no cal-trac's or after market parts. Sbc/glide/9inch/5.00 gear/3200 stall with a 150 shot. I may have a vid somewhere.

Your YouTube video is http://youtu.be/YiQ-h0LwdUM

So you take everything after the last / and put it in between [ youtube] and [/youtube]

It should look like this (without the space)

Thanks for the info. I'm still too financially screwed up to start on this, but I was looking at the truck today and started thinking about it.

I have a 28 x 9 on my blue truck and it works good . I have had a 28 x 10.5 true on the blue truck also that should be plenty of tire for a while . Best pass 11.43 this is on a 28 x 9 M/T with a tube.
