I'm about to semi-retire my 1980 LUV for some much needed repairs. I have a non-computer 770R4 trans I'd like to install. I'm not worried about driveshaft, wondering about tunnel clearance and cross member. Probably going to remove torsion bars and go with coil overs. Probably going to removable cross member at the same time. What should I expect? Tried the search option without much for results.

I pulled a 700r out of mine and went with a 4L80. The 700r was a tight fit but some slight BFH mods made it work. (it was in the truck when I got it) It was in place with the stock crossmember. The truck had (and still has) the torsion bars in it. (My other LUV truck has coilovers in it). I also have a v8 1989 Nissan that has a similar frame as the LUV. That truck has a 700r in it with the torsions. I fabbed a removeable crossmember for it as well...

I have a build thread for all 3 with pics (individual threads) floating around here somewhere...

If you use the 700R4 mount from ACE you don't much tunnel work. It puts the transmission on the original center line not above. Mounting it on the original mount points the output shaft up and increases the front U joint angle, unless you have the front also mounted higher than stock crankshaft centerline.
