Hello I have a 1979 LUV with the standard g180 motor with a weber carb, which I may swap for a g200 with weber carb, and standard 4spd 4x4 transmission and was looking into a 5spd upgrade from an isuzu. From what I understand the 1984-1987 isuzu pups and troopers had either 5 tooth (MSG-5ET-A) or 6 tooth (MSG-5ET-C) 5spd transmission for 4x4. What all would I need to do in order to use one of these transmissions. I do not know the specifications of the standard transmission and I do not know for sure how many splines these transmissions have i think 26 or 27? Any help is appreciated!

The only thing I know of with 5 or 6 teeth is the speedometer drive gear. That might explain why I've seen some MSG transmissions with 5-tooth and some with 6-tooth speedometer gears. The 4x4 output shaft has 27 splines, and will fit a 4x4 LUV slip yoke. Some people say 26 splines, but the yoke has 26--one of the notches is double-wide and accommodates two splines. I've read that the 5-speed is a little longer than the 4x4 4-speed, so I'm pretty sure the rear transmission mount would have to be moved aft, and the driveshaft would have to be shortened.

The MSG 5-speed 4x4 was really rare. I think it was only offered in '86 & '87.

JoeIsuzu thank you for your input, do you know a rough estimate of the cost of this conversion?

Depends on the cost of the transmission, and how much of the work you're doing yourself.

expect 150+/- for the driveline modification.
picknpull is 160 for a transmission and 160 for a tcase + tax + "environmental" fee. + the extended warranty which would be a good call to buy.. so 400+/-
driveline is something like 40 there so front driveline from the donor truck, plus at least the front yoke from the rear shaft
so at least 590 unless you find someone parting one out and in a hurry to get rid of it.

+ oil for the tranny etc..
expect 650+ since you will probably want a new clutch when you install it

The transfer case is integrated on this transmission, so they still charge for it separately?

He won't need a yoke, all 4wd transmissions had the same splines.

Very likely they would charge seperately. Some won't if you gert a chashier in a good mood or wheen the boss isnt in. but lately most of them have charged me for all the small stuff so I would expect to pay for both and hope to be surprised
the one decided to charge me for the individual bolts I took with a bracket

Don't forget the tranny crossmember has to be relocated rearwards, the 4x4 5sp is longer than the 4x4 4sp. And since the LUV crossmember is welded in place it's best to make the new one bolt-in, it makes R&R'ing the tranny much easier.
Another thing, the '79 4x4s still used the 8" clutch. If you use the G200 flywheel it takes a different 8-1/2" clutch.

Yes, 4x4s only started using the 8.5" clutch & flywheel in 1980, 2wds still retained the 8". All trucks with G200Z 1.9 engines used this same 8.5" clutch & flywheel. The flywheel has the same 6 crankshaft bolts as the 8" but with the larger clutch attachment pattern & can be retrofitted to a G180Z 1.8 engine.
This is the same clutch used with the TDs & 4ZD1 2.3 engines but with a different 8-bolt flywheel. The only place I know of to buy a new 1.9 flywheel is JLEMOND, all the parts suppliers list the 8-bolt model for the 1.9, but it won't bolt up to the 1.8/1.9 6-bolt crank.

I have a 4x4 5 speed for a trooper. It's an extra one I got with the Trooper it was an 88 with the 2.6. but the extra tranny I have just came with the rig. It was sitting outside and I can't promise that it works or many miles it has or anything but it looks fine, I'm not really looking to get rid of it but I would for $200 if you're interested. I'm located about 20 miles west of Portland, OR

That's not the one he's looking for. Isuzu used the MUA-5 transmission with the 2.6 engine. It _might_ work, but I've read that there are clearance issues with the firewall and/or transmission tunnel. It has a hydraulically actuated clutch, whereas the MSG 4wd transmission used a cable.
