My apologies for asking a question that's most likely been asked before....Too many pages to flip through to know for sure.

Where would I find gear sets for my stock '72? Either a 3.73 or 3.42 would be nice. I have a spare 4.56 set. Running a 4.11 at the moment. So, I'm not really interested in swapping rear ends or axles. Something that would drop in would be ideal. :D

81 and 82 4 speed 2wd gas and diesel LUVs (and later 2wd 4 speed gas and diesel Isuzu Pups) had 3.41 gears. 3.73 gears were in the 5 speed diesels. All 4wd LUVs and Pups had 4.1 gears. Happy hunting.

Will these drop into the 72 rear end housing without any modifications?

Yes. It's a fairly straightforward swap. Check this link out. viewtopic.php?f=6&t=25350&p=185682&hilit=Carrier#p185682

Thank you! I'll give it a shot once I find the new set. :P

Just had my new 1981 Isuzu Pup 3.42 carrier assembly delivered a few minutes ago. Looks like the whole thing will bolt right in. I'll get working on it when I have a little time to do so.

Thanks much for all of the help with this. It'll make for a much better highway ride. Next will be disc brakes! :D

The only change (from memory now) is one of the bolts is longer on the 81 carrier. So you remove the short stud from your stock housing and replace it with a bolt that is 4"-5" long to fit the carrier. Then all you need is a new gasket. 8)

"Then all you need is a new gasket."
Use RTV for the gasket, the actual gaskets are no longer made.
You might adapt the rear disc brakes from a '84-'89 Isuzu Impulse, that's the only vehicle I know of that used the 10-bolt rear with discs.

My local Autozone had the gasket in stock, it looks like you have to order it now.
