so im a little confused here guys
i was using an online calculator and im not sure if i have a 4.10
my trans 5th gear is .73 195/75r14 is about 25.5" diameter, using those numbers and a 4.10 ratio i should be going faster than i am at 2600rpm. i even changed the tire size down to 25" and 24.75 to compensate for the bit of tire that flattens out and still didnt get where i should be
by gps i am going 55 on the dot at 2600rpm. but several online calculators tell me i should be doing 64.6
if i use 4.56 as my gear ratio it puts me at 55.8 with all other factors included which is right where im at.
were there any 4wd trucks that may have come with a 4.56 gear set? because the math just isnt lining up with 4.10

one of the three calcs i used i prefer this one over most

If you do have 4.56 gears your GPS is spot on. 5 speed @ 55 mph = 2644 rpm. Who knows the history of your truck? Maybe it was changed out at some point. Start looking for a 9 inch and you can pick a ratio.

i can get ahold of the second or third owner not sure where he was in line there but not the original owner passed away, before the truck was sold.
it confused the heck out of me. i was doing the math to get a baseline for where mine is at now to see what the ratio changes would do for my cruising speed and i couldnt figure out why the rpm was so far off so i tried 4.56 and it was dead on.. may jack it up and see how many rotations i get out of it tomorrow

my numbers come out
2600rpm
.73 5th gear
195/75r14 = 25.5" diameter = 12.75 - .5 or so for the load 12.25"
with a 4.10 i would be doing 63.3
with a 4.56 i would be doing 56.9
my gps says 55 when im doing right about 2600 within a small amount
that would put me at a 4.56 so i gotta check this.
if i was gonna regear itd be to a 3.73 or a 3.42. would like at least a s10 3.08
or a disc 8.8 with a 3.07 or 3.23

Did you ever run the 4X4 when the front axel was in? If so did the two axels work together? Try to see what the ratio is in the front axel if you still have it around.

4x4 LUV pickups only came with 4.10 gears, for it to have 4.56s (& the 4x4 to have worked without binding) both the front & rear differentials from a '84-'87 Trooper would have had of been swapped in. This is a very involved swap, so I can pretty much guarantee you have 4.10 gears. If you are able to count the front diffy pinion gear teeth 4.10s=10, 4.56=9, both ring gears have 41 teeth.
I suspect you are using a too large tire diameter when you plug the data into your caculator. Go measure from the ground to the wheel center of one of your loaded tires inflated to the correct pressure. This is the rolling radius, twice that is the tire diameter you should be plugging in. This will be smaller than the advertised size, & remember that the tire diameter decreases as the tread wears. The advertised tire size is very seldom the actual tire size, it just means the tire is bigger than the next lower series & smaller than the next higher series. I have two trucks, each with a different brand of 31-10.50R15 tires. Each brand tire is actually more like 30.5" in diameter when unloaded. The loaded rolling radius is about 14.75" on the lighter truck, even less on the heavier. If I plug in a 31" tire diameter into your calculator I get a significantly different speed for a given rpm than what I am actually travelling.
