Found the answer to the rear end problem. On the S-10 the measurement is 54 1/2 inches outside of the hub to outside, and 48 inches from backing plate to backing plate. Blazers are two inches wider.
Best case scenario for me since mine is going to be a street sometimes strip truck is a 1995 to 2001.
(LB4-V6 TBI or L35 4.3 V6 CPI)
(M50 Man 5 SPD trans)
(GU6 3.42 gear ratio)
(G80 Positraction, Limited slip)
By the way those codes are the codes normally found in the glove box. The true 8.5 has two little square looking things on the bottom of the case looking from the rear of the vehicle. If you pop the cover and find 11/16th carrier bolts it's an 8.5. The smaller bolts are a 7.5.
Coil springs for the rear end started in 02, and they have the same options as leaf springs.

I looked all over, and could not find one. I ended up with a 7.625, 342 posi out of a two wheel drive Blazer $200.00. It's the same thing that was in my 02 Z-28 and it held up just fine. It should do ok on the street with a stock 5.3, and when I take it to the strip, I will be foot braking it anyway.

The 7.625 will hold up well with the 5.3 it is 28 spline

I'm not going to be doing any hard racing, or hot lapping or anything close to that. I'm not going to baby it all the time either. I'll take it to the strip, just to see what kind of times I can run. If things turn out the way I think they will, I'll be close to where they'll be asking me to leave. I would be happy if it does that well. 5.3 with a Ls1 cam, clean up the ports with a 4l60e and a 3:42 should get me into high 12's is what I'm thinking, maybe a little better with a tune.
