Again, with the brakes we run the 9 inch is lighter.

With all things equal the 12 bolt is lighter. It is an inarguable fact. If a 12 bolt with drums is only 8 lbs heavier than a 9 inch without any brakes at all then you'd have to run no brakes at all on a 9 inch to be lighter.
If you have very expensive high quality light weight single piston drilled non vented brakes you'd still weigh more than a drummed 12 bolt. The housing assembly without brakes is about 40-50 lbs heavier with a 9 inch than a 12 bolt. Compare apples to apples. Put the same brakes on a 12 bolt as a 9 and it will always be lighter by difference in housing weight. I've experienced the same mentality with people at the strip that use the rule of thumb idea and think that since they've been running the same setup for 20 years that nothing could possibly be better.

My original post was intended to help love4theluv with my personal experience and hopefully something useful came of it.

I have built both, 9 inches come out lighter every time for us, even with brakes. Bring your self thought no experience ass out here and learn something. Just went through some set up sheets from the day. Setting up a modified to run a Peris raceway several years ago. 12 bolt complete came in at 268, 9 complete came in at 223.

I am done arguing. You provided me in print proof that a 12 bolt weighs 185 fully dressed with drums. Which makes it the 40-50 lb difference I stated above.
Agree to disagree.
Truce?

Nope, my proof is the rear ends we weighed back in the modified days. I don't know what they were doing there with what brake set ups.

With all the aftetmarker for a 9" im sure it could be made very light. In stock trim i would think a 8.8 would be lighter in stock trim. Either way i will end up with a 8.8 just because of how easily i can get one and two short sides at any local yard for $200 and theres no way im going to damage it with my engine

Stick with the 8.8 . It is strong , parts are everywhere and cheap , and you can make it work on a budget with the right offset rims . A 12 bolt mat be lighter , but it is an outdated dinosaur that has been out of production since like 1971 . By the time you buy all the C clip eliminators and hard to find posi units you are better off 10 bolt 8.5 imo as parts are everywhere and cheap also . Plus you are only giving up .275 of ring gear .

X2 I'm not sure how the 12 bolt even got involved. I was comparing the weight of a 9 in to a 10 bolt in my original post but anyways....8.8=Awesome

I think the 12 bolt was in my first page list of options cuz i compared the two strength wise.. The 8.8 seems like the best all around option for me and having something ford sourced on my truck will keep my blue oval fan dad happy  me and him were talking about doing the mustang 2 front conversion later on after the 8.8 swap to give it some more adjustability and aftermarket support. Speedway motors just sent me their catalog and there are all sorts of parts for the mustang 2 front end..

The 8.8 and the 12 bolt are pretty much the same design wise. If it weren't for those pesky c clips, they would be really stout as is...

Hmm... going to have to do some number crunching and see where my ratios will stand. 3.55 would still roll out just fine. Anything better than my stock 4.10. i want to get some good mileage on the highway but still go 0-60 as fast as i can make it

Also , on an 8.8 with disc brakes the brake itself will try to retain the axle if it breaks at the carrier / posi . If it brakes out by the bearing ( they rarely do ) it will be worse . With drums and a C- clip set up you loose the whole deal .

Definitely the 8.8. I'm putting a fox body 8.8 in my truck. I have an explorer 8.8 that I got real cheap just for the brakes and 31 spline center section to put in the mustang 8.8. It's perfect dimensions so all im doing is hacking the old mounting points off the mustang rear and either welding my spring perches on or leave it for ladder bars. Then order 5 lug 31 spline axles, spool and gears of choice and im set. Im definitely using coil overs in the rear.
After its said and done I'll probably have close to $600 in the whole rear and itll hold up to my 600+hp street driven truck.
Hoping itll try and rip the tailgate off of it =D

I feel in the long run a 9inch is cheaper as they are everywhere. Getting a used one is not a problem.

12bolts are getting hard to find now. Forget the little Lincolin they are unobtiaumin. Somebody somewhere said parts are getting hard to find for that setup. I don't know why expect they were not made in large numbers.

Go with the common stuff. Weight will not matter. I have a 10 bolt in my truck with no problems. I have run slicks but no transbrake. Just old fashion foot break. We have a bracket race class called no electronic. No transbrakes, delay boxes, nothing. Inginiton is ok, I use a HEI and MSD box. I have a street able small block.

I wonder how wide the fox body rear ends are. Seem to be cheap.

not sure, im looking at probably getting a s10 rear axle in September or so, trying to track down with with the 3.08 gear because doing 2600rpm at 55 with my 4.10s gets annoying when the speed limit gets to 70
I have heard the tbird ifs 8.8 rear mentioned as being pretty good
