Does anyone know if there is a problem using the pre 76' transmission with the starter on the drivers side when installing 76-82 1.8l? I found an impulse 5 speed that I am going to swap because I have a 74' with hyd clutch and would like to retain it, but I am swapping the motor out for a post 75' 1.8l and I wasn't sure if I was going to have an issue with the starter. The tranny is mated to a 1.9 (G200) so I am thinking I will have to put the starter on the passenger side which would obviously require rewiring. I am not really sure of the setup as this is my first Luv swap.

Can't answer that question, but the 1.8L is going to have a tough time turning that 5th gear. The Impulse transmissions have a .755:1 overdrive ratio. What rear end does your truck have?

The 74 trucks had a 4.56:1 rear. It might do alright.

Yeah especially now that I did a compression check and no. 2 is going flat. It's a good thing I bought a newer, 78', 1.8l that I am planning on building up a little (probably to it's max). It has the stock rearend so I would imagine 4.56's? I haven't verified but everything I read on the forum points to that. Yeah, I was a little worried about such a deep overdrive but I didn't want to have to hunt down the cable style pedal and all the parts needed. I was also researching the 91'-95' rodeo transmission. Apparently it is a T5 that has the correct bellhousing. There is a guy that has a few of them on ebay for $225.00. If I was going to go the turbo route I would probably get a world class T5 and bolt up the aforementioned bellhousing. We have a great driveshaft shop local here that will weld up any yoke and then balance to 10k rpm. Still kind of weighing my options, although I already purchased and shipped the impulse tranny. Do you know if anyone sells gears for that 10 bolt? I thought about swapping in a ford 9" just to have a variety of gear combo's but I would hate to put ford parts in my chevy, not that I necessarily hate ford.

Agreed. Sounds like a good combination. My diesel has a 3.73, and even though the diesel gets its torque at a lower RPM than the G180, I still don't get into 5th much below 50 mph since installing the Impulse transmission.

Stock gears in a '78 gas with manual trans were 4.10s.

The starter will be on the passenger side with the impulse trans and 76 or newer motor. No choice about it really. Re-route the wiring and it should work good. I don't know how well the clutch parts fit together though. I have an impulse trans ready to go into my 77 someday but I have the slave cylinder to match it from the Imp if the one from the LUV doesn't work out.

For what it's worth, here's a page that lists specs for the Impulse. I can't vouch for its accuracy.
