Hello everybody,
I picked up a '86 trooper with a 5 speed for an amount I couldn't afford not to buy. I want to put the 5 speed in my '80 Luv with the 4spd, BUT my Luv is 2wd..... can I switch tail housings to retain the 2wd? Does anyone know if this can be done or anyone with any experience on this?

Thanks

Short answer: No
The Trooper 4x4 5sp & transfer case are a unit. You need a 2wd 5sp including the rear slip yoke (or use the Trooper yoke), then the 5sp conversion is relatively simple. The good news is the Trooper 5sp is worth more than a 2wd 5sp, so you should come out ahead moneywise.
Now, if you should want to convert your truck to 4wd cut out your 2wd front suspension, then swap in the Trooper 5sp along with a '79-'85 Toyota front drive axle and with some modified driveshafts.

Now that you got your answer, you have a rare transmission. There's a guy on the IsuzuPup.com site who is driving a 2.3 Trooper cross-country, and he lost 5th gear. He's trying to make it home to the Pac-NW in 4th. Last check-in, he was in Illinois, and he'd love to find your transmission. Where are you? North Dakota?

Read about it here:

Are the PUP trans/trasfercases separate? Or are they the same as the Trooper set up?

All manual tranny/t-cases are one unit.
'86-95 2wd pickups with the 2.3L 4DZ1 engine have the 5sp tranny you want.
