Hi all i have a 78 luv with a 355 9.8/1 e street heads 1.6 roller rockers torquer intake and holley 650 dp. When im running down the road it cools fin but when sitting at stoplights it sees +240 verry fast. What do i need to do to get it to stay cooler. The cooling system has a high flow 160 thermistat a 2 row aluminum radiator as big as it will fit i think 19" tall by 24" wide and a new water pump it has good flow. O i have a 16" electric fan 2500cfm. What am i missing?

Im no cooling guru but, maybe your coolant flow is to fast for the rad to cool or rad isn't big enough.

Just a guess, but 2 row (basically same size as stock) sounds small to me, for a V-8.

I've read here in the past that people have gotten a wee bit more cooling by removing the rubber gasket at the back of the hood near the cowl, wipers, and latch. The little bit of added airflow under the hood helps. I doubt it will be enough in your case but it might help.

It sounds like your radiator is big enough. I'm assuming you have one of the aftermarket aluminum radiators that are techically 2 core, but are the width of a 4 core? If so, that's what I was using in mine. Also, the fact that your OK when going down the road, tells me that your radiator is big enough.

It sounds like you don't have enough airflow when your stopped. Your electric fan must not be up to the task.

That makes perfect sense. When moving you are getting enough airflow, so the rest of the system is working. The fan just needs to move more air when you are standing still.

I have never had an electric fan work on any of my truck . I have always used the 22 x 19 aluminum . Also if the water pump pulley is to large the water pump seems like it wont pump fast enough .

A 1998 up Dodge Intrepid has dual electric fans with a shroud, and is close to the right size...

Check your timing, you may be too far retarded.
Use a 180* thermostadt.
Run a hot leakdown test, and or a combustion gas test on the radiator fluid. You may have a head gasket leak or crack somewhere.
You didnt mention a coolant recovery system. The zone has one available with the nipple on the bottom of the bottle that connects to the radiator.
Do not run pure coolant run a max mix of 50% coolant.
Agree the fact that it's not running excessively hot at speed, the radiator is of adequate size and the air flow is good.

You might not be running a small enough pulley either.I had a 85 s10 with a 400 hp 355 and had cooling issues when I first got it. I switched to a 165 degree thermostat. I also added on to the shroud with the mechanical fan. You might want to see what temp the thermostat for the fan is at.You might have to change what temp it comes on at.
