Hi Guys,

Is it possible to mount a 4L80E behind a 350 Chevy using the ACE mountings ? If not, what should be done differently ? I have a '79 model. Planning to use a 9 inch diff as well.

Thank you kindly,

Pieter

The 4L80 is basically an up graded OD version of an TH400. It will fit, however you will have to do some modifications to the torsion bar crossmember for fit and mount. Have you considered a 700R4 OD trans as it will bolt in.

Thank Sir ! I am seriously thinking of using the 700R4 as it is also non-electonic. However, I hear bad things about it burning out easily if it's TV cable is not correctly set up.

Setting the TV is not that difficult. Having one rebuilt and with some minor mods will live long time. The 700R4 is an OD, lock up unit and has an approx 3.08 first gear vs the 2.42 found in the TH400. Also uses less torque to spin it than the TH400.

Didn't see how much horsepower you are dealing to the trans which could be a deal breaker for the 700R4.

What is the HP? DD or weekend warrior/race truck?

700R4 is a great DD tranny but once you beat on them awhile they will die.

4l80 w/ opti shift controler is what I would do if I had any intention of flogging it on a regular basis.

Thank you Ben and Tanman,

I am planning a small block or LS-series engine with around 500 to 600 hp (maybe not a small block anymore, as the HP would be easier with an LS-type). That is the reason for me having difficulty in deciding on trannies.

Another thing.. I live in South Africa where parts are not widely available, and expensive as one has to import almost everything from the States. With a 10:1 exchange rate, this becomes a severely limiting factor. For example, where a part would cost you guys around $100, I will have to pay R1500. An LS 2 would cost me R35 000, and then it must still be built.

We do have guys selling cut-out engine and trans combinations imported from the US. And that is why I must know what I want before I buy even an engine.

The th 400 or 4l80E will fit in . You have to make the mods to the torsion bar crossmember before cutting it . I took the measurements and built the needed appendage then welded it into place I then built inserts for the 400/4l80E and an insert for the th350 and glide . I then cut the torsion bar crossmember this way it is double supported . The inserts bolt into the cut crossmember area . I only change inserts with the front suspension unloaded , of coarse for most of us the truck would already be on jacks for a trans swap .
