Hey guys,

I have a '79 4x4 that one of the previous owners upgraded with a Weber carb. I just replaced the gas tank, and while I was at it, I started replacing a bunch of the old cracked vacuum lines under the hood.

Once I started, I realized that the lines that were run didn't match the shop manual diagram at all.

The line that should have gone from the check & relief valve to the oil pan was missing. (Open on the valve side.) Instead, a line went from the oil pan directly to the head cover.

According to the diagram, the line from the head cover should go to the manifold. The line from the manifold under the carb instead was about 5 inches of line that was open on the other end, just hanging down the side of the engine.

I put the lines back where the shop manual shows, but now it's really sluggish to start, or doesn't start at all.

My question: Have I just stumbled upon an unlucky new problem (maybe points?), or was the incorrect line routing actually correct?

What the manual has:

How it was routed:

i have mine plumbed funny too where u have it drawn i routed the one up top (side of valve cover) routed into one of the weber vacuum ports, and the oil pan running to the stock place on the valve.. i have a lot of plugged vacuum ports as well, no pcv, no egr, lots of pressurised air comes out of the open pcv port on top of valve cover

Solved. Reconnecting all of those vacuum lines just made it run really rich. A quick adjustment of the carb and it's spinning like a top again.

Many thanks to this thread.

That is a little funny actually. The carb was tuned to allow for the previous vac leaks. Says something about the weber carb that it is tunable enough to do that. :)

I know, right? Considering how far off it was I'm kind of shocked it ran at all!

The stock carb has so much stuff that is vacuum dependent that it probably would not have run. The Weber is all mechanical, so it just needed to be set up to run rich.
