It's a cable clutch--it could still be 88+ (through '95). The fact that it's a cable clutch tells you it's not a MUA-5, which is good. You want a cable clutch, right?

Look at the output shaft (tail shaft). If it has 27 splines, it's '86-'95. The older ones had 17-ish splines. Make sure the starter bulge is on the right (passenger's) side since you have a gas motor. If the starter bulge is on the left side, it's for a diesel.

The last LUV year was '82, if it was the original tranny it's not what you want since the first gas 5sp was '86.

i have a cable clutch currently with my 4 speed, i was thinkin about the hydraulic, it seems like it would have more holding force
the 5 speed he has was behind a g180 but not sure what its out of. there was a cable clutch for 88+ also? i wanted the 88+ or the higher od ratio

Holding force is determined by the pressure plate, not the cable or hydraulics.

The 88+ MSG-5 has the same O/D ratio as the earlier 5-speeds.

If your prospective replacement tranny was bolted to a G180 and is a cable clutch 4x4 5sp then it is an '86 or '87 vintage from either a 4x4 pickup or a Trooper with the 2.3 gas engine. These are the only two years that particular tranny (gas, 4x4, 5sp, cable clutch) was offered. It uses the same 8-1/2" clutch as your '80 truck. OD ratio is .855:1. The 88+ cable clutch 5sp trannies are 2wd only.
To install the 88+ 4x4 MUA tranny with hydraulic clutch you need to do a body lift(or cut & patch) to clear the tunnel, then swap over all the hydraulic parts and you are still limited to the stock clutch you now have since it is the largest that will fit your flywheel.

Wow, I missed the 4x4 part in the original post. Some of what I said does not apply to the 4x4. As usual, oldestisuzuist to the rescue!
