I would love to upgrade the drivetrain on my 76 LUV and now is the perfect time since the engine died. It's been damn hard for me to find something that will bolt in easily (mid 80s Isuzu PUP or Trooper are pretty rare around here) without too much mods though.

I have been seeing a lot of S-10s (all years) and some late 80s-early 90s Isuzu Pickups for sale in my area though.

Can anyone tell me which of these two drivetrains would bolt into my 76 LUV 2WD with the least mods? Maybe someone here has done it already?

If it's gonna take a lot of mods I might as well put a Toyota drivetrain in there? Maybe someone has done that too?

I would like to keep a 4 cylinder in there for fuel consumption purposes, it is a small truck and I don't plan on doing anything really heavy duty in it. It's an automatic and I wanted it just to cruise really, but I would like to take it on the highway without redlining it or making it overheat.

Since you're in CA won't you fail smog if you install a later engine?

Yes and no...

If I just go do a smog check and they notice (I honestly doubt they will most shops in my area are LUV-ignorant/challenged) then it would fail because it's not original equipment.

If that does happen I can always go see the smog ref and as long as I kept the donor vehicles entire emission system (and computer if it has one ugh) he will give it a sticker to exempt it from the visual inspection so that they just focus on the actual smog readings.

I think it's worth it to get a better running truck with the classic look of a 76.

Here in South Dakota..we don't have smog tests. So I think we have it lucky here for car enthusiasts.

There are only roughly a million people in this state.Manufacturing keeps moving here because of the tax breaks the state of SD and the local governments give to these places. When is the last time you watched a NFL, NBA or NHL game? More than likely the scoreboards came from Daktronics..Brookings SD!
But back on the subject...if it is 2wd...I would just do a newer pup/Luv motor that will bolt in.You should be able to get away with the smog stuff as long as you don't make it look so obvious.I would find 2.0 and a five speed out of a newer vehicle. You can tell them it is an over bored motor. The transmission...case broke so you had to upgrade. Would be the first time they have been told that!
