I drove a 1999 Rodeo for work( working in a repair shop) and liked the DOHC and 5 speed in this little rig. Engine was smooth as glass...plenty of power.
Anyone done this swap? Can you put a distributor in this motor or do you have to wire in the computer or is there a stand alone computer , and can you use a carb?
The less computers to deal with the better!!

i know the older carbed 2.3 single cam, the 4ZD1 is dang near bolt in, and can be found in pups (and i believe rodeos and troopers) not sure about the newer engine but it would definitely require use of the ecu/harness but i dont think it would be completely outrageous to think it can be done.
im planning to use the 2.6l efi single cam 4ZE1 from an older 4x4 trooper which requires bringing the computer with it or going standalone (im planning to go with a megasquirt)
the 4ZD1 2.3 would be real easy to get in and running and is covered well on ozgemini so is the 4ZE1 2.6L, i think the 4ZD1 with a weber 38/38, shaved head, cam and headers would be pretty sweet in a luv,
this might be something to ask about on ozgemini and isuzupup

Well I was thinking the DOHC motor for the rpms down the highway.I haven't checked with any of the local salvage yards yet.

It appears the title has a typo, should read "3.2" rather than "2.3".
DOHC engine is a 6cyl, 6cyl & 4cyl have a different tranny bolt pattern, so a swap would also require a different tranny. No carb parts either, only EFI. You would have to swap all the electronics & emissions also.

Well actually I meant the 2.3. I could weld and machine my own intake for the carb. Or use an aftermarket fuel injection like a mega-squirt. And I was thinking the transmission also. I was more worried about the wiring of the CPU than putting in the five speed.

im having trouble finding the engine your talking about , any idea of specifics about it or a possible name designation of the engine? im finding a 2.2 Gm made I4, 3.2 v6 and a 3.5 v6 available for the gen 2 (98-04) rodeo but not a 2.3 other than the sohc 4zd1 from the gen 1
but i do know megasquirt is calibrated for use with gm sensors so if you do go the custom ecu route it would just be a matter of installing sensors the MS can read from and working on a tune.

According to the computer we parts search at work..it is a 2.3..but I think it is the same motor that was in the Saturns...has GM parts all over it...alternator,intake and exhaust manifolds.

Pretty sure it's a 2.2

+1. I've owned several Saturns and had one with a 2.2 but never a 2.3.

it happens but yes it should be a gm sourced 2.2 vortec with 130hp. not very common in the rodeo but im guessing it would be the same one used in the s10 and most gm's with the 4 cylinder in that year range
