I stuck a five speed from a 84 imark in my luv. Is the slip yoke seal just a dust boot or is it designed to hold oil in? I;m hoping its not something deeper in the trans.

It's designed to hold oil in. If the yoke has a rough surface (like a burr) in the wrong place, it can chew up the rubber seal. They're not expensive, and they can even be replaced without removing the transmission. Some people even put two seals in.
