I too have an 80 4x4!.. wish it was stepside though =( anyway ive been toiling with the idea of putting in a 5 speed as well. but from what im reading theres no exact bolt in swaps.

My 4 speed is in good shape so what ive decided to do is just get a little bigger rims to change the gear ratios so im not screaming down the highway (going 50) but if you DO find something that works post it! i may be wrong!

The sources I listed are as close to bolt-in as you will get- it's the same tranny as the stock 4sp except longer & with an OD 5th gear: you have to relocate the support crossmember, cut new shifter holes, replace the slip joint with one that fits the new t-case and lengthen the front & shorten the back driveshafts.

i was going to do the trooper trans swap before i picked up a v6.
you can find all of the parts at a yard for a couple hundred, i got quoted aound $70 per driveline for shortening at a shop in portland.
would be worth it for freeway driving, if your planning to keep the luv for more than a few months i would do it
