i have a 77 Luv. It is a stock drive train truck., I want to change the gear ratio or swap out another axle for more of a highway gear. 4.56 is awful low geared for the highway. Or maybe swap in a 5 speed. Any suggestions?

'77 should have 4.10 gears.
Swap in a 5sp, 5th gear will be like having 3.50 rear gears while still maintaining the power you now have in the lower gears.

Try doing a search on the site. This has been covered several times here.

Yeah this is a newbie question. That said, you can swap in: 4.56, 4.10, 3.73, and 3.42. I have 3.73 and do 70 on the freeway with the 4 speed no problem. They can be had at parts yards for 50-100 bucks (the third member). 5speed would be good but I think the third member is an easier swap.

What is your RPM's like at that speed? BTW, Before ANYONE says it, yes I DO know how old this thread is. :) Thank you for your concern.

But the thread is so old the guy you are asking does not even own his LUV anymore.
