From what i have been reading of this forum and trying to gather knowledge, I have came to a conclusion that if someone want hp out of these little engines, its all in the head. So to try and get some reasoning to my wallet  can somebody give me a rough estimate of how much HP can these engines get by:

1. Port and Polishing a head?
2. Regrinding a Cam? <---- how does one go about this?

I have an 87 Isuzu Pup 1.9L with a 32/36 DGEV, Accel Ignition Coil, and free flowing exhaust ,2.5 Dia pipe, (though I have read that with straight pipe, I may be loosing back pressure, which is needed for torque, is this right?

Thanks,
Marcos

yes torque is gained with a restrictive exhaust... but not so restrictive that it is the same diameter as stock

as for a port an polish your looking @ 2-5hp and 3-6 foot pounds of torque base line but a port and polish isn't mostly for gaining hp/torque its for the throttle response... gains here are seat of the pants feel imho on this small of an engine but if your going to be raising compression and adding a cam you could see as much as 15hp and 20ft/lbs of torque (over a non polished and port matched head) (p.s. take that high # as a huge guess)

as for a cam i couldn't even tell you or guess

but i don't see with a nice cam grind thats giving you power between 3k-5500, bigger bore pistons, higher compression, a full head job (port/polish/reground valves) why you couldn't get a reliable 130 hp out of one of these for less then $3k

Thanks for the feed back guys. This site has a ton of info :D and I am trying to understand of all of it. Well I recently ordered my Offenhauser intake from Mokadeth and will be getting some pacesetter headers soon aswell 8).
Like i said before, from what i have read, if i dont have any back pressure I will loose some torque so since I am running a straight pipe, what kind of muffler would you all recommend?

i have always been impartial to magnaflow but with this truck i will most likely be going a different route.... (there stainless and come with lifetime warranty)

any ways to your problem there is an easy solution to increasing torque run 2.5" pipe to the muffler and run 2.25" exiting out the rear of the truck... or when i finally get around to doing my exhaust i will probably run 2.5" to the muffler and dual exit with 1.75

are you still running the stock distributor? the pup electronic one is an improvement over the original one if your looking for a bolt in upgrade.. would work well with the offy, weber, header and cam... kind of the 5th piece of the power puzzle  or the pertronix electronic conversion has been used pretty often with good results
