I went to remove a shift lever from a parts truck and noticed that the shifter was held in place w 3 bolts instead of the 2 bolts that I'm used to. The three bolt layout is 2 toward the front of the truck and one in the back. The two bolt pattern is one in front and one in back. It was a little hard to get in and run the shifter through the gears because of parts piled inside but it seems that it might be a 5 speed. Can anyone verify?

If you are looking at a 5 speed are there cast in marks or other obvious signs.

My 5-speed has two bolts holding it to the transmission. I pulled a later model 5-speed that had three holding the shifter, as you describe. I don't know if that indicates a later 5-speed, or just a later model.

What vehicle is it coming from?

Its an 80 LUV which I bought as a parts truck without ever talking to the previous owner.
I'm sure its not the original tranny judging from the look. I never gave the transmission any thought until I happened to remove the boots and noticed the odd bolt pattern holding the shifter in. I drove it home, so that would mean that the drive shaft mismatch has been taken care of.

If the transmission is pre-'86, there should be no driveshaft mismatch. However, that's not a reason to favor the pre-'86 transmissions. They're weak, compared to the '86-'95 version.
