Picked up one out of an 85 Pup. Put it in, fired right up. A little ways down the road it started making a weird noise. It was like something inside the distributor was grinding or something. Kind of like a "whir" type of sound. Changed the cap, gotta wait till tuesday for the rotor. Any ideas what it could be?

was the cap cut up on the inside? check to make sure the shaft is not worn, should have any free play other then just spining around, no side to side movement

No, the cap wasn't cut up. there's not play at all. It's a nice, snug fit. I don't know what's up with it.

oh yeah. It made my aftermarket tach freak out too. I don't know if there's something wrong with the coil or what?

If you can make and post a video it would be easier to make a guess closer to what the problem maybe. My guess, it sounds like a bearing. Check the dist closely and check for metal shavings or small silver flakes.

It's too intermittent to be able to take a video. It hasn't done it for a while after i torqued down the coil wires so maybe that did it. before, it would do that after i hit about 3k. I'd shut it off and start it and it'd stop.
