im 18 years old own a luv 4x4 that has a 3 in. body lift and 3 in. bigger tires. and it just has the stock engine in it.
i was waundering if anyone knew how to beef it up a little bit so i dont bog down so much going up a hill. and to burn a little rubber
im doing this project for a 79 luv 4x4 i want it to be a pretty mean little pickup with little money into it.
if any one know any tips or secrets i would luv to know so people stop making fun of the tin can full of rocks.
(the 80 lifted pickup may not be fast but it has pulled out A LOT of full sized pickup then i laugh at the name tin can full of rocks.)
so if anyone knows some tips or secrets please let me know

The search icon if your friend around here. There are several threads about more power.

Search around. there are more.
Depending on your local smog laws, a Weber carb, intake manifold, electronic ignition, header, and de-smog, are just a few tricks that help.

I does not give V8 power that will brake things, it gives you noticeable improvement power like better throttle response and more get up and go. My truck is more fun to drive and very responsive. If I were to guess at an HP number it would be between 20-30 more hp, could be less but my truck had a poor working Hitachi carb that reaped havoc on my performance.

i think mine with the complete kit to get it set up and the air cleaner was just over $300 brand new.
as he said it wont give you a 100hp jump in power or anything that extreme but it makes a huge boost in throttle response and increases your power throughout the rpm range.
there are a lot of little things that can be done cheaply to pull more power out of the stock motor.
if you look at the motor as what it was designed to be you start to see what can be done to beef it up for cheap.
the engine is similar to an industrial stationary engine (kind of liek you would see running big generators at construction sites. made to run FOREVER but not be powerful.

so if you think of what an engine NEEDS to make power, Air, Fuel, Spark, compression etc.
*the stock carb is junk, doesnt flow well and its really unreliable. solution = weber or R1 carbs
*stock exhaust manifold is restrictive and not very well made solution. = headers
*stock cam profile is set for good fuel efficency but not a lot of power. solution = cam regrind or g200 cam
Stock valves can be replaced with g200 valves if you get your head machined to fit them.
electronic ignition helps with reliability and keeps it consistant

it all comes down to how much are YOU willing to put into the stock engine?

How well do the Weber carbs do in cold weather/cold starts? Do they have a good choke setup?

The first money should be spent on a 82 up electonic dist. and believe me it is the best money spent. Then do the carb.

Is there much difference between using an 82+ distributer and the pertronix ignitor? Does either perform better? Is either more reliable?

just get on ebay and look for a distributor out of a 83-87 pup with a 1.9l in it. That is what I did and it cost me 35 dollars shipped to the door... new cap and rotor another 17. The difference it made was unbelievable. No more maintenance with points and it was a super easy install too

just make sure you gap the plugs to the specs of the distributor
