A guy at my technical school offered me the stright six and tranny out of a Jeep Cherokee. I drive a 79 LUV 2wd. Worthwhile project? Or any advice, surely someone here has tried this, but I couldn't find anything. :egeek

You will have to cut the firewall and core support. Its more work then a small block chevy that you will wish you installed anyway

So... any advice? If I wanted a SBC, I'd just do that. I want a four or a six, and this one is available. I don't mind work one bit, as long as it's mean when I'm done.

Would be a pretty reliable engine since its not the jag.. would look sweet under the hood tho. But like he said I would think firewall clearance will play in. But if its there and cheap and you can fab, why not?

Straight 6 in a luv is a ton of work due to the amount of cab work you will need to do. There have been several threads on this, good luck.

It's not a worthwhile project. It is a simple issue of fit. It's an inline straight 6 - it's too long. LUV's have a somewhat short engine compartment. If it were a V6, then it would be a little easier.

A Jeep straight six is also a very tall engine, they get their famous low end torque from a long stroke. You may have problems with oil pan clearance. Since the engine is available go measure it from the bottom of the oil pan to the top of the air cleaner (measure the length while you are at it), then see if the thing will even fit in the engine compartment with the hood closed. Pay particular attention to how the bell housing will fit at the firewall. Is the exhaust manifold on the driver's side & if so will it clear the steering?

the 4WD out put of the HEEPs are on the drivers side, ZOO's 4X4s are on the passenger side.

Like ANY project, it's all a matter of fabrication skills, time and money. the sky is the limit (almost literally)

kind of like this...

hear that? "Well OVER a million dollars"

not trying to discourage you, but if you have the skills to do it, and the drive, then GO FOR IT! I for one would be very curious to see this come to fruition... :ebiggrin

Would the tranny and rear end from a 2002 Isuzu Rodeo work in my 79 LUV? Stock engine. The donor car's motor blew something through the block.

No, not without a ton of work. If the donor is a v6 then the tranny won't bolt to the LUV engine, the Rodeo rear axle is considerably wider than LUV axle.
