Hey guys - does anyone know how to put flame thrower exhaust on
a truck the right way?

When I say "the right way" I mean not the olejust put a spark plug in the exhaust pipe and run a wire to the spark plug and turn on the switch idea.

How do you make the control box like the real mfg companies make to have full spark capability.......... If I could just find out .... it can't be that hard to make.

Any help would be great.

Thanks

the show trucks on speed showed installing a coil at the rear of the vehicle and controlling it by a switched relay.
the coil of course went to a spark plug in the tailpipe.

uuuudddnnnnn......uuuuddddnnnn.... :onfire:

I know that I need a coil at the rear close to the spark plug and that I need to excite the coil but I know that you can't just juice up the coil and make it spark at the same rpm as the engine..........I need to control it with something like an ignition module but I have no clue how to wire into one to make it work like I need to.

It must be a good secret because I can't find anyone that can tell me.

Thanks,

check out http://www.gotflames.net

They have some pics of their product, maybe you can figure it out from there.

Thanks for the link.

I just want to know what is in the little black box!

if i am not mistaken your coil is always hot, and the distributor is what tells it to fire in what cylinder as the distributor turns and makes contact with the contacts in the cap.

So I think what is in the box, is a relay, not sure if that is the right word, kinda like a blinker switch, where you turn it on, and it pulses at a set timeing. this would control probably the ground current to the coil, thus telling it to countinually fire.

I am thinking that is it. just go to your local radio shake for the parts you need to put in your own little black box.

The kits I have seen are setup to cut power to the ignition system on the motor and kick on the coil for the flames. The idea is that you rev the motor up, hit the button and start pumping the gas, the motor pumps fuel/air right through to the exhaust because the plugs are not firing, the rear plug lights up the mixture. The black box is probably a disconnect relay for the motor's coil and start up relay for the rear coil.

As for how to get it to fire, you might be able to get spark from wiring a coil right to a plug and giving it 12 volt. Only way to find out is to experiment, and this is sort of like mad science right? If not, you do need some kind of dummy ignition circuit like a condensor/relay combo to initiate a spark much like the points work in the distributor.

Looks cool....but for some reason it just dos'ent sound like it's good for your engine. Whats the stess level on that?

It is not really bad for your engine..........but on the other hand, If you put the spark plug too far up in the exhaust pipe, it has the tendency to blow the tailpipe and sometimes the muffler smooth off of your ride.

Homenuget has it closest. What happens is the coil always has power to it when the key is on it doesn't flow into it though because there is no ground...so the points close...the primary circuit energizes through some windings. There are smaller windings that are part of the secondary (spark plugs and wires) circuit and when the points open again since there's no ground, it uses magnetic inductance to jump into the secondary circuit. Anyways... basically you'd need a 5 pin bosch style relay, what you need to do is disconnect the power to the coil that fires the engine momentarily...it won't shoot flames while you press the button...it will do it when you release the button and only for a moment until the current dissipates. Anyways...you can't constantly do it...it will only fire after you cut the ground to the coil for the rear.

Oh yeah...no stress level on your engine really it makes it run rich...which isn't that bad...one word of caution. Raw fuel will ruin catalytic converters so if you do this all the time you will ruin your cat. E-mail me and I'll work up a diagram or something

Hey V I would like a wiring diagram for it. I was thinking of doing it for a while but I figured that I would wait until I got my V-8 first but since I have it now I figured that what the hell.

I'll tell the way I did it. Probably the easiest way to do it... Ok, the hardest part is #1 you need to find a model T coil. How hard are they to find? Not very... just go to an antiques shop. I picked one up just down the road from me for $10.

Why a Model T coil? Simply because the coil actuates itself independently. What I mean is that since most coils need something to constantly ground, then un-ground, then ground to keep a spark going, the Model T coil has an actuater that does this by itself. The result? All you have to do is hook up power, ground, and a wire to a spark plug in the pipe and you have flames.

Just a quick overall idea of how to wire it... First you need a hot wire from the battery or elsewhere to go to a switch. Any switch you want... a toggle or pushbotton, whatever. Then from the switch you run a wire to the Model T coil. In my case, I hid the coil in my bed since I have a tonneau. Then you run a ground wire to the coil, and a wire from the coil to the spark plug in the exaust. All you have to do is flip the switch and the plug is firing. I didn't want to ruin my exaust outlet pipe so I got a spare piece of pipe that fit over my tip and drilled a hole for the plug to go it. Then I could just slide the pipe with the plug in it on or off at my convenience.

Anyways that's just my idea. My grandpa actually taught me how to do it (hence the Model T coil, lol) and I have yet to see any one else use my technique. Don't go spending $80+ on those stupid kits on the internet.. they don't even include the coil(s). You can make your own for cheap... my whole setup was under $15 for EVERYTHING includin the plug.

Let me know if I can help

-Kevin
