guys, i just found out the seals are leaking on my rear end differential. coupled with the problems im having on the front end, im thinking about a few things.

If i pulled the axle shafts and unbolted the front of the differential, could i swap out the complete diff assembly with one from a 2wd? are the casings the same?

i was curious to see if it could be done, then i figured it could be done to the front diff casing too and that way, i would have the 2wd's gearing, while still having 4wd capability.

is this theoretically possible?

otherwise im probably going to slowly dismantle the truck and part it out. :(

let me know guys!

Good news & bad news-
Any Isuzu 10-bolt 3rd member with whatever gears will fit in the rear up until they started using rear antilock brakes, it got bigger to allow for the exiter ring & won't interchange between RAB & non-RAB.
The only gear options for your 8-bolt front are 4.10 (pickups) & 4.56 (Troopers), and you have to remove just about the entire front end to change the front 3rd.

but the question remains. will the same year diff from a 2wd fit in the casing?

im asking because it SEEMS like it would work, but i can't be sure...

some pictures that made me think this...

as seen in picture one, if the carrier assembly comes out as one unit, will the front wheel drive unit work the same way and could a 2wd REAR carrier assembly fit into the front wheel drive case? i know that the front end would need to be dropped, but again, if its a case of relatively simple drop and swap, it might be worth it...

It will swap for the rear but not the front- a rear 3rd will not fit in a front, a 10-bolt will not fit in an 8-bolt axle housing.

3.42, 3.73, 4.11, 4.55s will fit the rear 10 bolt

4.11, 4.55s fit the front 8 bolt

so.......if you want to turn an extra 300 rpms in one of the 80mph speed zones in Utah, yea you can change to 4.55s

also i can see this question coming lol

there are zippo LSD for the front 8 in the USA.
and very few for the rear in (rear drive) Isuzu turbo cars something like 87/88 or 88/89, yea needle in the hay stack stuff.

no LUV, PUP or TROP was sold with a LSD 1987 back all the way to the first luv year.
