I think your in new territory there. I would look into a TH400 with a transfer case on it, but I have a feeling your going to be doing some "major mods" no matter what route you take.

if you are going to do rock crawling or hill climb type of 4x4ing, i would go with a 700R4/ 4L60Eor similar. It has a 3.06:1 first gear which will give you a little extra where it counts. and the bonus is that you can click it into 4th when you hit the freeway. Make sure you get the later model 700R4 trans (I think 86 and later but preferrably 94 on up) they are stronger.

for 4x4 purposes youll probly whant an SM465/NP205 combo. The sm465 is a 4speed whith a 6.5:1 first gear, great for crawling. And the np205 t-case is a steel case whith gear drive, vary tough. And these combos are a dime adozen. To keep 4x4 youll probly need to swap to a solid front axle, it shouldnt be too hard just pull the front springs off a k-5 blazer and get a Dana 44 front end.
