hey everyone i hope some (and im guessing most) of you can help me out here...

i found a 350 in pretty good shape on CL, it was from a 98 tahoe with about 90k on it. the guy also thru in some heads from an 80's something ( he didnt know what year exactly, or what car they came off of.) and an intake that i havent looked into yet. its cast iron so im assuming its a little older...

so the 350 i have is technically a vortec engine. and ive read some things saying i need to get vortec heads for it. and a special vortec intake, is any of that true?
the bolt patterns on the heads i have are a match to the block. and it looks like the intake will match up to the heads just fine.

if something is made for a 350 will it work with all 350s?
im wondering if, while my heads and intake bold up fine, if there is something internally thats going to get messed up because they are from different series 350's

thanks everyone, let me know if i need to give you more information. im learning this stuff as i go and some of its kinda confusing... to many options you know?

(on another note, you should have seen the deal i got! 350 block, heads, intake, 2 quadrajets from the early 70's, hooker headers, small water pump, engine stand, starter, hei distributor, etc etc for $350 bucks!!!! and the same day i got a rebuilt th350 for $200. thanks CL!)

congrats on your score.

from what i've googled, you can put vortec heads on older engine blocks, i haven't seen anything about not being able to do the reverse.

Vortec heads will bolt to an early block. You will have to have a vortec intake and more than likely valve covers. If you are going carburator the intakes can get expensive

PUTTING VORTECH HEADS ON AN OLDER BLOCK WILL WORK. I HELPED MY BROTHER BUILD A 78 BLOCK WITH 97 HEADS. WE HAD SOME WORK DONE TO THE VALVE BOSSES. THE VORTECH HAS A SINGLE VALVE SPRING AND THE OLDER 350 HEADS HAVE A DUAL SPRING SET UP. WE DID THAT FOR THE BIG CAM WE ARE RUNNING IN IT. THE INTAKE WE GOT WAS A ELABROCK INTAKE I GOT IT BEFORE THEY HAD THE AIR GAPER AND IT COST ME 100. I HAVE SEEN THEM AROUND 140 AT SOME AUTO PARTS STORES.

Ok, he has a vortec shortblock and the earlier heads and intake guys, if I am reading correctly. His question was, will they fit the Vortec shortblock. Yes they will...

haha yea, vortec shortblock... thanks for the input guys. i really do appreciate it.

a lot of this is very very new to me and there are so many different configurations out there its a little overwhelming .

on that note...

do i need a special intake to use with my '72 quadrajet?
the one that came with my engine is only a 2 bore, and thats just not gonna work for me haha.

i saw the offenhauser intakes that were made for the q-jets, but damn are they expensive..

can i use any intake that is made for a 4bbl spread bore?

thanks again everyone!

Best fuel milage with a Q-Jet . Best power with Holley or that style.

Crash, you can use a stock 305/350 OE chevy Q-jet intake they are aluminum past '80 or so. I put one on my yellow LUV years ago and it had plenty of hood clearance under the stock hood, and they are cheap, just block off the EGR pad if it has one. That with a Q-jet on a fairly 'stock' 383 ran 14's all day (with smog equipment in place) and it averaged 17mpg hauling my big butt around, a great combo IMO for not a lot of $$$. You would pick up on power if you ran a vortec head/intake combo as they have a far better flow coefficient compared to stock 'smog heads'. FYI

plus i have some sweet hooker headers ;)
