Hello, I'm new to this forum as well as owning my 1st Chevy Luv. I bought a 1980 Luv 4X4 at St. Vinnies for $350 and drove it home.

Does the fact that this is a 4X4 limit my engine replacement possibilities? I just want it to run and drive good. The engine smokes fairly bad but runs pretty decent, and I think it would be cheaper to find a good running motor to replace it with rather than rebuild it. Am I wrong about that? What all Years and vehicles will bolt in directly?

Thanks, 80luv4by4

Basically only that block will bolt to the trans. Now, those blocks were used in many other Isuzus over the years, up until around 1986. (guys, correct me if I'm wrong) So you are limited, but there are other Isuzu vehicles that you can get engines from.

A G200 1.9L is a direct bolt-in replacement. A 4ZD1 2.3L or 4ZE1 2.6L WILL bolt to the trans using the right combination of parts, the problem with the larger engines is front drivetrain clearance. Using a 2.3 2wd oil pan will allow fitting either engine into a 2wd LUV, not sure if it will also clear the 4wd.

Would it be cheaper to re-ring it with a valve job? (Assuming the crank is fine.)

If it does not need boring, yes, if it does, probably still yes...
