Ok i was talking to my mechanic and he told me that i could leave the 4 speed in without swaping to a 5 speed.....put a low gear for 1st like a granny gear then for 4th gear put a high gear like an over drive so i could get good gas milage/go faster with the 4th being higher and for off road put a low gear or leave the 1 it has......does anyone know the gearing in the transmision?

for the rear you can just put a locker.....and i would have all the traction i would need with a locker in the rear and good tires......the motor is pushing 85 hp and with the intake, carb, header upgrade i will have about 110 horse power which is more than enough to push the luv around off road.....and also said that any motor can make any car go 200 mph as long as the gearing is right so swap out some gears and see what u can do.....

And just where are you going to find these gears and lockers?

A gas LUV 4sp tranny has about a 3.8:1 first gear ratio, same as a gas 5sp, diesels are about 4:1, that's all the tranny gears there are. Transfer case gears are all 1.87:1 reduction. You have 4.10 differential gears, the lowest available are 4.56, a 5sp with 4.56 gears has about the same final drive as a 4sp with 4.10 gears, but has a 11% lower crawl ratio.
I have Aussie Lockers in the rear of both my rigs, so it CAN be done, it just takes a special custom made thrust block- amazing traction off road.
Bottom line, most of the parts just aren't available to follow your mechanis's advice.

Not to be an ass BUT if your mechanic is so wise then he should know where this kind of gear change parts are.

If i remember right (getting old ) the Troopers up to 86 and maybe them to have 4.56 gears and without a 5 spd you will need tall tires to get right back where you are now and that makes it all a wast of time and money.

You can search for the lockers and you might just get lucky and find them in Australia from our brothers down there albeit they might be used and not cheap to ship.

Don't give up but i think you might be better off with the 5spd to cover both ends of your crawling and highway speed.Oh and the 5spd will give you good gear choices as you go as the gear separation is progressive.

I bought one of the aussi lockers and it did not fit right, too much clearance in the axle bearings. I see you said it takes a custom thrust block. Where and how did you get this part? Thanks for any info you can provide

the only low range up-grade kit on the market for Isuzu, is for the MUA trans 1988 up
:!: most things on the independent4x site are for a MUA trans or the 12/10 axil combo :!:
https://www.independent4x.com/merchantmanager/product_info.php?cPath=68_69&products_id=232

you have the older MSG 79/85 as 4 speed.
there literally is no after market parts for these old MSGs.

the only thing you could possibly do, is take 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th from a 5 speed and put it in a 4 speed.
but since there geared the same, theres no point in completely taking two tranys apart, and putting them back to gether.

after frying my trans.......
i took all 15 or so of my bearings to a biz that deals in selling bearings, they could only get two of the 15.
the rest where strange OEM only sizes and unavailable.

as to the gearing TJs right, 4.11s and 4.55s are it for the old 10/8 bolt combo.
all luvs/pups have 4.11s and nearly all troopers have 4.55s
