if there from 5 speed gassers most likely they are 4.11 maybe a 3.73

if there from a diesel it could be a 3.42 3.73 or 4.11

there was a change in the bearings in 86 when the 2.3L was a new thing.
the cases are the same, bell-housings are the same, this up-grade trans can be found in models made 86/95
86/87 its in the pups then 88/95 in the trucks.
it must have a 2.3L engine and 2WD to be the same trans, the only big issue is the yoke.
good info on up-grading your trans.

most 2WD diesels are 3.73
oddity's are as fallows :egeek

diesels with 3.42s where sold with a 5 speed but had to be a CA spec model with a MPG+ package
3.42s in general are rare, nearly all are found with a 4 speed and are S\B in all most every case.

so if you found a 2WD diesel S\B with a 4 speed, its just about a 100% chance its 3.42 gearing.

gassers had 3.42 as well in some models, but i don't know what had what in those.

3.42s are like a flat land model, and will burn in most cases more fuel in 5th than 4th cause its to tall of gear.
thus why theres nearly none of them. :egeek

4X4s are a given that they are 4.11s ONLY 79 to 87

if you change the bell/front case, to a gas with the 6 bolt pattern, yes it will work.

sadly..........4 speeds where made in a 4 and 6 bolt pattern :( the older you go the more that are 4 bolt :(

the difference is in the cover plate, over the front bearings.
so if any trans is 6 bolt 2 or 4WD the bell can be swapped.

that diesel bell is of value, and should not be scraped its an important part to changing a gas pup/luv to diesel.
the bell, the engine, RAD is the hardest parts to find for changing a gasser to diesel.

any trans from a 2.3L will be the stronger 5 speed trans, and will have the right bell.

"true" 85 year models are not 2.3L, there 1.9L or 2.2L diesel.

the only issue with 5 speeds from 81/85 is the diesels can shred the bearings if you like to run at 35/45 mph in 5TH gear.
granted it takes years of this abuse for this to happen.

i would think the gassers will do it as well, just take longer.

yes 85 back, there is no 2.3L gas engine.

1.9L gassers have the distributer on the front of the engine.
like this photo
THE 2.3L ENGINE DISTRIBUTER ARE AT THE REAR OF THE ENGINE.

Sorry, you did say "diesel". Yep, that would be a 2.2, it's the only diesel ever offered in a P'up or LUV in the U.S.
