The blow off valve is to prevent the turbo compressor from surging and stalling when you close the throttle plate under boost, so yes, it's needed.

If you're going to run a rear turbo setup, where are you going to put the carb? If you put it at the front, you're going to have fuel travelling all the way from the turbo and back, which can cause it to pool, and be a fire hazard.

I don't think doing this with a carb is a good idea...

I'm curious.....would it be safe to do this if the turbo was mounted in the engine bay?

I havent done this myself, but it seems like a simple solution would be to strip down a turbo impulse and either use the impulse motor or use the parts on your block. I would think it is pretty much a direct swap other than if you have to figure out the computer wiring if it has one.

first off, you will need to convert to a 4bbl or weber style intake... something that will accept carbs for blow through operation.

I can fill you in on all you need to know about it....but it wont be an easy quest to make the power you want with the 1.8... aftermarket support is slim and overseas parts are expensive.... I dont see it being worth the money or time (i traveled this verty road not to long ago.) on it...
