When I was swapping my carrier in the rearend I found that the end play in the drive shaft was minimal at best. The yoke is into the trans with about 1/4 inch or so to spare. Is this enough end play for the driveshaft? I wanted to put on a set of 3" lowering blocks, but will this effect the driveshaft at all? For some reason I thought the distance between the trans and rear would be reduced slightly by lowering the truck. Does anyone have any experience with this issue?

Thanks

Too close. Sometime angle shims might help. On a GMC I owned, I had to put air shocks on it to drive it. I was being cheap, and did not go with any airbags. Dropped spindles and blocks in back... It would tear out the rear u joint and one time a transmission seal. I even had to replace the transmission. Luckily I had a spare . I should have shortened my driveshaft. The rear drop was too much for me anyway.

Have to agree with PapaG, that is not enough clearance and you can damage some pretty expensive parts, U-joints, rear ends, and especially transmissions!! A little money now will save a lot of bucks later!
Lowering the rear end will not help this situation either.
Good luck

Thanks for the info guys
I got a quote to shorten it for $90 today. They told me to take off the ds, lower the truck then measure the distance.

Ditto on the future damage with clearance.
What tears up ujoints is when the angles are not opposite. The transmission center line should point above the pinion and the pinion should point below the trans. This gives the opposing angles needed.
Reason is that as u joints turn theyaccelerate and decellerate the opposing sides. By have opposite angles, this then works in unison.
