Make sure that what you have now is putting out the best it can. Go for a major tune up. Fresh filters all over the truck, make sure you dont have any air leaks anywhere (gaskets and bad hoses), make sure you have a properly working cooling system, Make sure your tranny and rear end have sufficient lube. It wont cost that much to do just this. You may not see much of a performance gain but at least you'll be ready to build from that.

If it's possible (emissions testing wise) you can build your own exhaust system that has a fatter diameter tubing with a less restrictive muffler. You can get some power gain for around 100 bucks if you buy the parts and install it yourself. This will show an increase for the money. I was clowning around with my truck when i first got it and i would shut off the ignition while driving down the road in gear. I would turn the ignition back on and the truck would backfire and scare the crap out of anyone near by. I did this one too many times and i split the muffler. I drove around like that for months and i had to fix it. I replaced the muffler and i thought that a boat anchor was part of the installation. A fresh muffler robbed a ton of power from the truck. A new exhaust will show the most improvement of the least amout of money.

new exsaust will make a huge difrence. also when that is done i find that my truck when i use the hight octain gas it back fires hella!! you should get bigger plug wires and a msd master blaster coil. that will hel and get nicer spark plugs go to your local muffler store and ask for a spin tech muffler that is one of the best mufflers for the luv with 2 1/4 inch pipeing that will add some power and some soundw if you get that done your luv will be hella throaty. you will be impresed
