I plan to pick up my Bravada chassis this week. (If my LUV runs after installing the Carb from our dear friend Ctmandu) Since I've decided to take the advice on NOT keeping it full time four wheel drive due to possible repair costs, I want to hit a Pull-A-Part for a 700 R4 tranny. What vehicles were they common on and what can I visually check to see if it should be good. I know the best way is to bring it in for a check-up, and I will, but I was wondering if there is anything I can check on-site before pulling it. Other automatics I simply pulled the disptick out and checked the fluid on a white cloth, smelled it, looked for obvious damage, and dropped the fluid pan for metal.

Camaros, vettes, full sized trucks and cars from around 84 to the early 90's. They are all about the same if they were behind a v8, with the exception of the 'vette ones, they had the servo upgrades and higher stock stall speeds than the rest, and some slightly beefier mods on the inside. Not, the full sized cars will have a longet overall length... IDK what you could check other than the fluid for a visual. If you do a rebuild, I recommend an aftermarket sunshell, since that is the most common problem on them. I just installed a 89 tpi Camaro 700r in my s10 Blazer, with the aftermarket sunshell, the corvette servo upgrade, a 90 'vette replacement convertor, and the one wire hookup, and I LUV it...

Yea, I read about that shell problem in another thread. Did you rebuild your own tranny or have a shop take care of it. You know, got to save a nickle where possible. The one thing I have plenty of is time!

The tranny was a low mile rebuid freebie. I added the servo upgrade and the one wire conversion myself though...

The sunshell is definitely something to replace. If you have the opportunity, drop the pan and look for metal shavings. There will more than likely be "some" if there any amount of miles but it shouldn't be excessive. Some pans have a magnet in them to catch shavings. Maybe the magnet came a little later...not exactly sure when it came.

dont be afraid to look at a 200 4R either.

many of the 80s "performance" cars used these. 442, monte ss, GN, T-type, TTA, etc etc

these transmissions can be stronger than a 700 after building and offer a more even gear layout so you avoid the slump in the 1-2 shift.

just a thought.

The disadvantage to the 200R4 is its mounting length. You will have to cut and weld on the torsion bar xmember to correctly mount it. The mount is towards the rear of the xmember. If you mount it on top you will have the trans too high and cannot get the proper driveline angle. The correct line is for the pinion centerline and the engine / trans center line to be parallel. U joints should always have the opposite angle on the ends. As a ujoint turns it will accellerate and decellerate the drive shaft. With opposing angles when the front accellerate the rear decellerate and vice versa. This is the onr reason that the factories used constant velocity U joints on thier cars.

I don't see a problem with building a replaceable cross member any way Old Rob as it would make life allot easier if the trans needs work or changed. I built mine using 3/8"X2" strap and i" schedule 80 pipe.
I have pic's of it if needed.

Mine is a piece of 1x2 c channel, bolts to a piece of angle welded to each side of the frame...

They do not agree with each other. I know the powerglide and the th350 are the same.
